Title
St Paul's Church in Burdett Road
Description
A view looking north up Burdett Road, Stepney, dominated by St Paul's Church, and its spire, on the corner with St Paul's Way. This Victorian Gothic church, with a huge stained glass window at its west end, was built in 1858. On 20 September 1940 the church was damaged by bombing, and then on 19 March 1941 incendiaries gutted the church, reducing it to a shell. It was replaced by a modern church, built in 1958-60 in the new Brutalist style, which is Grade II listed. The three-storey terraced houses on the right with flat roof lines no longer exist; houses with frontages on Booker close now occupy the site. Of the two houses with triangular apexes next to this terrace, the one to the right, number 223 Burdett Road, remained standing beyond 1979 in a derelict form. The house next door, number 221 on the corner with St Paul's Way, was demolished and was for many years the site of a petrol station and garage. A block of flats now occupies their site. Burdett Road is seen as a cobbled street with tram lines. A tram is travelling towards the distant railway bridge and what was Burdett Road Station. A man with a handcart and various pedestrians pose to camera.
