Description
A view of the removal of the clock tower in Burdett Road, Stepney, by the steam engine of E.W. Rudd Ltd, with a crowd of onlookers including children. This clock tower was originally erected in Burdett Road in 1913. It commemorates Stanley B. Atkinson, 1873-1910, Barrister at Law, Stepney Borough Councillor, Guardian of the Poor, and member of the Metropolitan Assylums Board. The clock tower was moved to Stepney Green in 1934, where it still stands in its own fenced green. The restored tower was given a Grade II listing in 1973. The four-sided tower has a door on its northwest face, and two stone panels with relief sculptures titled "Education" and "Benevolence". A pair of lion heads sit above each of the four reinstated clock faces.
