Title
Detail of a building in Artillery Lane
Description
Detail of front bay window on the left-hand side of 56 Artillery Lane, Spitalfields. This mid-eighteenth century house with shop front is Grade I listed, listing number 1357760. Note the metal handrail beside column. Worn iron bars protect the basement opening of the bay window with a metal grille above protecting the lower window panes. The combined shop front is one of the oldest in London, and the road was named Raven Row before. After World War II, number 56 was merged with number 58 into a single office building. The buildings were refurbished after a major fire in 1972, and c2006 they were sold to Alex Sainsbury, heir to the Sainsbury's food chain, who converted them into the Raven Row free art exhibition space.
