Title
House in Layton's Buildings
Description
View of 2-5 Layton's Buildings looking west towards Borough High Street, Borough. Layton's Buildings was an alleyway constructed by Edward Layton, a vat maker to whom property on the site of the King's Bench Prison was leased in 1761. The main building in the centre of the picture, with shutters on the ground floor windows and wooden bay windows on the upper floors, is described as a merchant's house and was previously, according to Goad's 1887 map, a brick and timber fancy warehouse. The building has the words "195 Borough" painted on the wall above one of the front windows and there is an "Ancient Lights" sign above the side window (‘Ancient Lights’ or the ‘Right to light’ is an English property law that gives house owners the right to receive natural light from and through a window if that particular window has been receiving light uninterrupted for 20 years). The alleyway is wide and cobbled and beside a cast iron lamp post in front of the gardens of numbers 4 and 5 there is a man and a horse drawn delivery cart. The approximate location of the alley is now a private road between two commercial buildings.
