Title
Shops in Walworth Road
Description
View of shops at 376-398 Walworth Road on the corner with Empress Street (now Gateway), Walworth. A dentist, on the corner with Empress Street, and a shoe repair shop are visible and number 382 appears to have been demolished. The houses and shops were built on the former site of the Walworth Workhouse in the 1850s which was also the location of a toll house between Camberwell to the south and Walworth to the north. The whole terrace was damaged during the Blitz and while the roadside architecture was retained, the rest of the terrace was demolished in the early 1950s and the Gateway Estate was built in the early 1960s.
