Title
The Priory building in Webber Street
Description
View of the Priory residential building 13-55 Webber Street, Newington. The Priory building, which still exists, was built in 1893 as social housing and was the birthplace and childhood home of photographer Bert Hardy. A saloon car with the bonnet open is parked in front of a gated entrance above which is a sign for A&P Stallion Ltd. The building on the left is called Hope Mission. Number 55 further down the street, on the right of the picture, is the Bell public house which is sometimes claimed to be the successor to The Windmill in St George's Fields mentioned by William Shakespeare in Henry IV part 2. The public house was demolished in 2012 and replaced by a modern residential block.
