Description
Houses in Wagstaff Buildings, Southwark, looking south from outside number 1. On the left are weatherboarded houses numbers 2-6 (left to right, consecutive). Number 2 has been knocked through at the rear and incorporated into the coffee shop at 6 Great Guildford Street, number 2's door serving as rear access to the combined premises and the window shutters secured with planks nailed across them. On the right are three weatherboarded former houses with ground-floor window shutters secured with timber strips nailed across them, the first-floor windows boarded up, and the front door of the nearest house secured with an iron band. These were numbers 9-11 (left to right) but have been uninhabited for more than 40 years and the site is part of Arnold Goodwin & Sons Ltd's engineering works in Sumner Street. Six young girls and one young boy pose for the camera. A woman is stood in each of the front doorways of numbers 4, 5, and 6. A man in a flat cap is standing at the corner at the southern end. The rear of 55 Zoar Street is visible beyond the corner, and a young girl is standing against its rear wall. A dog is blurred by movement is in front of number 5, and a stool is stood outside number 4 with a glass tumbler thereupon. A washing line is strung between number 4 and the building opposite. Two iron bollards prevent carts being turned into Wagstaff Buildings from Zoar Street. The entire site of Wagstaff Buildings was redeveloped and covered by the east end of Bankside House.
