Looking east at the front elevations of 2-10 Union Street (right to left, evens), Southwark. Rebuilding is in progress at number 8 (4 prior to street renumbering in the 1860s) behind the facade; scaffolding supports working platforms, a debris shield, bracing around the window voids, and enclosed walkways for pedestrians, with a gap between them for access to Chapel Yard. Loopholes on the right-hand side of number 10 on the first and second floors were serviced by a crane to their right, and the hinge brackets of an earlier larger crane remain to their left. No construction work is intended at number 10 but the scaffolding around number 8 extends across number 10's ground and first floors to support and provide access to it above the Chapel Yard arch. On a notice above the walkway enclosing the pavement the contractor, JM Hill, apologises for inconvenience to the general public. Half of the pavement adjoining number 8 is behind hoarding and consequently half the enclosed walkway projects into the carriageway and a wooden floor at pavement level is provided. The ground floor of number 2/4 (formerly 2) is occupied by W Shipp & Son Ltd, electrical goods suppliers. A sign at first floor level informs that DF Pullen & Co, office equipment suppliers, are to be found within. An ornate semicircular hopper at the top of an iron drainpipe captures water through a hole at the base of the parapet. When the bomb site of number 12 was cleared the former party wall was rendered, and the edge of number 10's facade above ground floor level was left without a straight edge, anticipating brickwork of new development at number 12 being keyed in. A ligatured "HD" sign on number 10 provides details of a fire hydrant. Scaffolding is also erected at the side of 94/96 Borough High Street bracing the facade during rebuilding within. A towable compressor for pneumatic tools is parked against the nearer hoarding, one wheel chocked with a brick. A moped and a Ford Granada Mk 1 Ghia are parked in front of numbers 6 and 2/4 respectively. The sites of numbers 10 and 12 were redeveloped.
