Title
Buildings in Union Street
Description
Looking south-east at the front elevations of 31-37 Union Street (left to right, odds), Southwark. Number 37 (186 prior to street renumbering in the 1860s) has been rebuilt above the first floor with no centre window on the second. Number 33 (formerly 188) has an illuminated sign box in the window declaring the premises to be a licensed betting office, and half of the name board has slid sideways within its frame revealing the end of the earlier board that described the business as “turf accountants”. A blocked off decorative grating in the stallriser previously lit the basement. The first-floor windows have window boxes. The second-floor centre window has been blocked off. Railings above the facade coping imply an accessible flat roof. Number 31 (formerly 189) has a vent pipe protruding from a second-floor blocked-off window pane. The dormer window gives access to a flagpole, reflecting the building's past as an army cadet headquarters. A single yellow line on the south side prohibits parking during the working day. A Ford Anglia 105E is parked on the north side. Number 33 was rebuilt. The right-hand shop window at number 35 had panes added below the existing, and the left-hand window replaced with a doorway. Numbers 31-37 are Grade II listed, listing number 1386008.
