Title
Buildings in Union Street
Description
Looking north at the front elevations of 60-68 (right to left, evens) Union Road, Southwark. Numbers 62 and 64 (numbers 26 and 27 prior to street renumbering in the 1860s, and 5 and 6 Bridge Street until the 1850s, both from right to left) are the two surviving buildings of the original seven that were between O'Meara Street (formerly Worcester Street) and the entrance to an engineering works on the left through the railway arch (formerly South Street). The front facades have been braced with two ties through number 62 at first-floor level and four at their party wall. Number 62 has plain flat-sided pilasters supporting the shop cornice with a double-door to the shop and a single door to the upper floors between them. The window is protected with removeable shutters secured with a bar. A hatch in the stallriser between panels originally gave access to the basement under the shop window display shelf. Number 64 has moulded achitraves around upper floor windows; it appears empty, possibly uninhabited. Number 66/68 has a triangular floor plan on the remaining part of the site of two separate shops demolished in the late 1890s for the widening of the railway viaduct to provide a fourth track on the Charing Cross line. Number 60 was built in the 1930s as part of an electricity sub-station; it has steel-framed windows, and a railing around the top which implies the roof is flat and accessible. A Vauxhall Victor FB and a Rover P6 are parked. This northern branch of Union Street was originally Bridge Street, the original road opened in 1819 to Southwark Bridge prior to which there had been a row of houses immediately in front of this view along the north side of the main alignment of Union Street (Queen Street until 1813). Serious structural defects in numbers 62 and 64 were discovered in the 1990s and after a period of dereliction the buildings were in danger of collapse. With stabilisation and renovation work they, and numbers 66-68, were incorporated into the 'Flat Iron Square' hospitality area within and on the northern side of the railway arches (the name 'Flat Iron Square' being taken from the Union Street / Southwark Bridge Road triangle). Numbers 62 and 64 are Grade II listed; listing number 1386010.
