Title
Houses in Villa Street
Description
Looking north at two-storey terraced houses and shop numbers 1-13 (left to right, odds) on the east side of Villa Street (formerly Ewhurst Street), Walworth. Number 15 Wooler Street (formerly Webb Street) is visible in the distance, houses in Hope Street beyond, and Shaftsbury Street on the right at the side of number 13. The photography has caught several people's attention. A donkey and cart are stopped on the left, their owner blurred by movement, and a young boy is behind the cart. A horse and cart is stopped outside numbers 3 and 5. Three or four of the household of number 3 are observing from outside and two more from a first-floor window, four from number 5 are outside, and one is watching from the first-floor window of number 11. Number 7 has been converted to John Rusby's confectionery shop with the insertion of a shop window. A simple iron boot scraper is set in the wall beside number 13's front door. The name signs of Wooler Street and Hope Street are in good condition but the painted one of Shaftsbury Street is virtually illegible due to exposure to the elements. The photograph was taken to record the scene prior to demolition. The leases on these and adjoining streets expired in 1903 and the freeholder, the Church of England, was persuaded by Octavia Hill to redevelop the area with social housing rather than sell it as the Ecclesiastical Commissioners had intended. The new estate became known as the Octavia Hill Estate. Many of the streets within the new estate were re-aligned.
