Title
Nelson House in Union Street
Description
Looking north-west at the front elevations of Nelson House, a block of flats at 200 Union Street, Southwark, on the corner with Great Suffolk Street (formerly Gravel Lane).

Designed by Gilbert Scott as almshouses for Mrs Vaughan's Charity and dating from the late 1860s, the building has lost its hipped roof and surmounting clock tower from the corner section, and the hipped roof from the smaller adjacent tower-like section. The almswomen were removed by the charity in 1907 to new accommodation in Ashford, Kent.

The railway viaduct to Blackfriars is in the background on the left. The visible section of Union Street was Charlotte Street until 1908. The building was demolished and the site redeveloped with an office block.
