Title
Globe Buildings and Violet Place
Description
View of Violet Place, Southwark, looking north-west from Globe Street. Globe Buildings is a late Victorian 'model dwellings' block of two- and three-room flats. The far end of Globe Buildings incorporates a warehouse and workshop at 6 Violet Place, advertised as available for rent. Beyond Globe Buildings are houses at 4 and 5 Violet Place (right to left). At the end of Violet Place is the rear of George Aland's ventilation engineering works in Nebraska Street, beyond which can be seen the top of a telegraph pole furnished with at least six crossarms with up to eight insulators on each. A gas street lamp standard stands at the junction. The side of 4 Globe Street is on the corner to the right. The site of Globe Buildings and 5 and 6 Violet Place was redeveloped a part of Abinger House with the alignment of the Violet Place roadway forming the eastern side and adjacent shubbery of the southern portion of Abinger House's service road. Number 4 Globe Street and twelve neighborouring properties in Globe Street and Tabard Street have been replaced with a two-storey commercial building. Later, two more storeys were added to that building to create one comprising flats and a private vocational college at 56 Tabard Street. This part of Globe Street became part of Pilgrimage Street.
