View of Green Dragon Court
Description
Rear view of 20-24 Borough High Street, Southwark. Within Green Dragon Court which connected Bedale Street to Southwark Cathedral. Named after a public house which stood in what is now Bedale Street from at least the eighteenth century, although known as Cobham's Inn in the fourteenth century. Number 20 is a three-storey building with a sign for W & A CHAPMAN, fruit salesman, who continue to trade. Number 22 is a three-storey building with an elaborately carved shop front and doorway. Two bow windows, one large and one small, on each side of the doorway, flanked by carved Corinthian pilasters and with a pediment above containing a cartouche with the date "1663." This door and its surround were brought from Holland by the tenant of the premises, and set up in Green Dragon Court in 1919 by Messrs. Cooksey and Partners, architects and surveyors, who made the rest of the ground-floor frontage to correspond. The shop front and doorway were removed in 1948, and placed in store by the City of London Corporation who owned the premises. Number 24 was occupied by W. Beeson a potato supplier which ceased trading in 2010. These buildings were demolished and a new railway viaduct built over the site for the Thameslink Project. Under the viaduct is a glass enclosed-extension to Borough Market known as the Borough Market Hall.
