Description
View of Borough Road, Southwark. Number 1-36 form Murphy's Buildings (now Murphy's House); a six-storey tenement building constructed by the London County Council in 1900 on the site of cleared slums, under the 1890 Housing of the Working Class Act. There is decorative plaster work over the entrances, and it is enclosed by cast-iron railings. Each tenement had a separate WC and a scullery. In the 1911 census, 18% of occupants were employed by government or a local authority, and include eight Police Constables and a Police Sergeant. The block has since been modernised and is now administered by Southwark Council. To the left are numbers 19 and 20 Borough Road. Number 20 is a three-storey building with a sign above the shop front for R.HOWE. A sign on the first floor wall advertises COVERED VANS FOR REMOVALS, CARRIAGES LET ON HIRE. In 1911 this was occupied by John Hobbs, Barrow Maker, his wife Johanna, his son; a labourer, and daughter; a furrier. Number 19 is a three-storey building with a shop sign for VINCENT FOR GINGER BEER and MINERAL WATERS. In 1911 Henry Arthur Vincent lived there with his wife Ada (born in Cardiff), and their two sons, one a printer's labourer and another a costermonger. These buildings were demolished and the site is now an open green space on the corner with Milcote Street (formerly Warwick Street).
