Title
Buildings in Borough High Street
Description
Rear View of 209-211 Borough High Street, Southwark. Number 209 is a four-storey building with mansard roof and dormer windows. On the ground floor a car parts shop: BOUR DISTRIBUTING Co. Ltd. In 1921 this was Clarke, Nickolls & Coombs Ltd, wholesale confectioners. The building was demolished and the site is now a modern office building with a coffee shop on the ground floor. It also houses the John Harvard public library, named after the Southwark clergyman John Harvard (1607–1638), who emigrated to Massachusetts and bequeathed most of his estate, including hundreds of books, to the college now known as Harvard University. Number 211 is a three-storey building; on the ground floor: TAYLOR AND SON, DRAPER AND OUTFITTER. This had been occupied by the same company since at least 1921. On the back wall a sign ANCIENT LIGHTS, referring to the right of a building or house owner to the light received from and through his windows. Windows used for light by an owner for 20 years or more could not be obstructed by the erection of an edifice or by any other act by an adjacent landowner. This rule of law originated in 1663, based on the theory that a landowner acquired an easement to the light by virtue of his use of the windows for that purpose for the statutory length of time. This building was demolished and the site is now the relocated Angel Place. In the foreground is St George's Garden which opened as a public garden in 1882 on the site of the old graveyard of St George's Church.
