Borough High Street is one of the oldest streets in London being the main thoroughfare from London Bridge to Kent since antiquity. On the right, number 4 built in 1834 by George Allen to a design by Robert Smirke, was one of the first grand railway hotels in London, serving London Bridge Station opposite. A four-storey building with a covered entrance along the side with a sign 'Restaurant Entrance'. Above the ground-floor windows and entrance signs: BRIDGE HOUSE RESTAURANT, and BRIDGE HOUSE GRILL BAR. Ionic pillars front the first and second-floors and above is a sign JOHN GARDNER (LONDON) Ltd. Now converted to offices with restaurants on the ground floor, the building is Grade II listed, number 1378341.
