Description
Shops at 234-250 Borough High Street, Southwark. Borough High Street is one of the oldest streets in London being the main thoroughfare from London Bridge to Kent since antiquity. Number 250 is a four-storey building; with a ground-floor shop 'A.H.Uppington, Rubber Stamp and Ink Maker Established over 60 years'. Advertisements on the wall for Pioneer Marking Inks. In 1911 Augustus Henry Uppington lived in Catford with his wife, three children and a servant. Number 248 is a four-storey building with sign on the ground floor: Feedwell, Dining Rooms. In 1921 this was owned by the Walton Brothers. Number 246 is a four-storey building with the ground floor sign for Ashford's Laundry, which had been on this site since at least 1921. A narrow passageway between numbers 246 and 244 was the entrance to Nelson Place cul-de-sac . Number 244 is a four-storey building; on the ground floor Donald Mills Pottery Ltd, and Hubball and Mills Ltd. In 1921 this had been J. S. Smith India Rubber Manufacturers. Number 242 an empty four-storey building with a shop sign for Shapiro Bakers and Pastry Cooks. In 1921 it had been Edward Tew and Son Bakers. On the wall a 'To Be Sold' sign from Field and Sons Estate Agents. Number 240 is derelict with the fourth floor demolished, having been occupied by Mrs Annie Minsky, Milliner in 1921. The front of the building is enclosed by advertising hoardings for Nux Chocolate Bars, the Daily Mail Ideal Home Exhibition, Guinness and Nescafe coffee. Number 238 is a three-storey building, the ground floor occupied by Wonico Fish Restaurant, and a sign for Fish and Chips, owned in 1921 by Samuel Park. Two men on ladders are working on the front of the buildings. Number 236 and 234, on the corner with Lant Street, form a four-storey buildings without glass in the windows. In 1921, number 236 had been occupied by Augustus Harris Hairdresser and number 234 by George Henry Richards, Manufacturer of Horticultural Sundries. These building were demolished and on the site is Redman House a high-rise housing block.
