Description
View of 185-193 Borough High Street, Southwark. Borough High Street is one of the oldest streets in London being the main thoroughfare from London Bridge to Kent since antiquity. Number 185 is a three-storey building with a mansard roof and dormer windows. On the second floor is a painted sign for 'TAILOR' but the building is empty with signs 'To Let by Field & Son Estate Agents of Borough High Street'. A young man and woman stand in front of the shop looking at the camera. Number 187 is a narrow four-storey building with an attic extension. Painted signs on the walls: NOVELTIES DOLLS AND TOYS. Hanging outside are wooden toy carts and a wooden horse. In the window are numerous toys. Number 185 is a narrow four-storey building with bay windows on the first and second floors with a painted sign: A. CHATFIELD EST 1872 HAND SEWN BOOTMAKER. In the shop window are shelves of boots and shoes. Number 191 is a narrow four-storey building with a painted sign KENT HOUSE. The shop sign SKINNER is above a window displaying hats, mostly straw boaters. Two men stand in front of the shop looking at the camera, one wearing a bowler hat and the younger one a cap. Number 193 a three-storey building with a sign BEECHAMS FOR THE LIVER (referring to Beechams Pills first manufactured in 1842). The shop D. White is a pharmacy with numerous bottles in the window. These buildings were damaged by bombing in World War II and the area has been redeveloped with modern office buildings.
