Description
Front elevation of 4-22 Gladstone Street, Southwark, by Colnbrook Street. Laid out in the mid-nineteenth century on land owned by the Royal Philanthropic Society which was founded in 1788 to protect and reform children who were "the offspring of convicted felons" or who had "themselves been engaged in criminal practices"; they had an institution at nearby St George's Fields. The street runs north from St George's Road then east to London Road. This section was originally known as Albert Street. Part of a two-storey terrace with basement and attics, built in 1849-52 by Garland and Christopher architects with stucco to the ground floors, and originally known as Albert Terrace. Numbers 10-12 have a triangular roof pediment. Basement areas are enclosed by mainly original cast-iron railings. Numbers 4-48 are Grade II listed, listing number 1385548. Cars are parked on the street including an E Type Jaguar and a Morris Traveller.
