Description
Front elevation of 15-31 Gladstone Street, Southwark, looking north-east. Laid out in the mid-nineteenth century on land owned by the Royal Philanthropic Society which was founded in 1788 to protect and reform children who were "the offspring of convicted felons" or who had "themselves been engaged in criminal practices"; they had an institution at nearby St George's Fields. The street runs north from St George's Road then east to London Road. This section was originally known as Albert Street. The houses were built 1849-1852 by architects Garland and Christopher. A two-storey terrace but number 31 on the corner has three-storey, with basements and attics. Number 31 has a double gated entry to a yard at the rear. A ladder is propped against the wall and two women are in conversation. Original cast-iron railings enclose the basement areas. The terrace is Grade II listed, listing number 1385549. A number of cars are parked on the street.
