View of Gladstone Street
Description
View of The Albert Arms, and 3-11 Gladstone Street, Southwark, looking south-west. Laid out in the mid-nineteenth century on land owned by the Royal Philanthropic Society which was founded in 1788 to protect and reform children who were "the offspring of convicted felons" or who had "themselves been engaged in criminal practices"; they had an institution at nearby St George's Fields. The street runs north from St George's Road then east to London Road. This section was originally known as Albert Street. On the corner of Gladstone Street and Garden Row is the three-storey Albert Arms pub advertising Toby Ales. Adjacent, number 3-11 Gladstone Road form a two-storey terrace with basements and dormer attics behind roof parapets, with original cast-iron railings enclosing the basements. Built 1849-1852 by architects Garland and Christopher, they are Grade II listed, listing number 1385547. Across Colnbrook Street is a similar terrace also built by Garland and Christopher and Grade II listed, listing number 1385549. Numerous cars are parked on the street.
