Title
Church of Christ the King in Gordon Square
Description
A view of the church of Christ the King in Gordon Square, Bloomsbury. The church is in Early English style on the scale of a cathedral. It was built as the headquarters of the Catholic Apostolic Church of the Irvingites, but only five of the seven projected nave bays were completed; the west wall was a temporary one. The uncompleted crossing tower was designed to have a spire 300 feet high. When the last Catholic Apostolic priest died in 1963 the church became part of the Anglican University of London Chaplaincy, becoming the sole place of worship in 1968. A sign outside reads: "University Church of Christ the King". In the foreground is a lamp post which bears the legend "St Giles Board of Works". On the right, viewed obliquely, are the front elevations of terraced houses at 31-34 Torrington Square. Cast iron circular coal hole covers are visible in the York stone flagstones. Many cars are parked in Torrington Square and a moped has been left by the lamp post. Partly obscuring the church at the left is the Quaker International Centre, now in residential use, at 1 Byng Place which was built about 1832 by Thomas Cubitt. It was Grade II listed in 1974, listing number 1272403. The church, dating from 1851-54, was Grade I listed in 1954, listing number 1113038.
