Buildings in Torrington Place
Description
A view of Torrington Place, Bloomsbury, looking west to Gower Street from Byng Place. Many cars are visible and a small number of pedestrians. The small plaza and building in the foreground whose side door is visible, are part of University College London (UCL). The building entrance is in Malet Street. The turret to its right is part of 42-56 Torrington Place and was built as a terrace of shops with flats above in flamboyant Franco-Flemish Gothic style in 1907. It was designed by Charles Fitzroy Doll, the surveyor of the Bedford Estate and was Grade II listed as the former Dillons (now Waterstones) bookshop in 1907, listing number 1379009. Opposite at 33 and 35 Torrington place is a pair of houses dating from 1824 and built by Thomas Cubitt. They were Grade II listed in 1974 , listing number 1379008. Behind it is a tall office building. It and the light coloured building to its left form the Roberts Building of the UCL Bloomsbury Campus. The BT Communications (formerly the Post Office) Tower rises above it. Further left in the centre of the image are Gordon Mansions and Woburn Mansions. The BT Tower, completed in 1965, was Grade II listed in 2003, listing number 1350342. All the buildings still exist.
