Description
A view of Shoreditch High Street, Shoreditch. Shop fronts and stalls line the road. Pedestrians, cars, lamps and horse-drawn carts are visible. Among the shops is Charles Lynes Outfitter and Metropolitan Boot Co. A crowded horse-drawn bus is seen heading north; among its advertisements is Pears Soap. Another is visible faintly heading south. A boy is wheeling a bicycle along the road and nearby stands a man in bowler hat and waistcoat. A man is leaning against a lamp post reading. A horse and carriage in the foreground seem to have no driver. A man in a suit and bowler hat carrying something like a candelabra is walking nearby. Built between 1865 and 1880, the taller Italianate building on the left is the National Westminster Bank at 180-182 Shoreditch High Street which was Grade II listed in 1975, listing number 1235319. Nearest the camera, the early eighteenth-century terrace at numbers 187-189 (consecutive) was Grade II listed in 1975, listing number 1235320. Other buildings seen on the same, west side, of Shoreditch High Street no longer exist, having been replaced by modern office blocks or vacant lots. Most or all of the buildings on the east side no longer exist.
