Title
St Stephen's Square from Tabard Street
Description
Corner of St Stephen's Square and Tabard Street, Southwark. In 1909 the Southwark Medical Officer for Health reported that properties in the area were structurally debased and in a general worn-out condition with poor sewers and house drains. The area was redeveloped as part of a slum clearance scheme in 1913. The site is now part of Tabard Gardens, a large lawned space with sports fields and a playground. The view shows the scaffolded tower of St Stephen's church (built 1850, demolished 1965) and a row of three-storey buildings with the ground-floor level, facing Tabard Street, used as commercial premises, although many are boarded up. The entrance to the workshop of Thomas Henry Laver, wood turner, opens onto St Stephen's Square.
