Title
Warehouse in Southwark Street
Description
View of warehouse of Millington and Sons, wholesale stationers, Southwark. The warehouse was on the corner of Great Guildford Street and Southwark Street and was one of many large commercial premises built between 1864 and 1875 after Southwark Street was laid out by the Metropolitan Board of Works. The stationers were operating from these premises from the mid-1870s until the 1930s when the company was acquired by John Dickinson and Company. The premises were badly damaged in Word War II. Also visible is a partial view of the exterior of The Pelican, 80 Southwark Street; a hotel and restaurant which opened in the late 1870s. In 1912 the landlord was Charles Auguste Probst. It has since closed.
