Title
The White House in Old Kent Road
Description
A view of The White House at 155 Old Kent Road, Southwark. This Grade II listed Georgian house was built in 1800 by architect Michael Searles as his home and office. It is set back from the road with a front garden bordered by wrought iron railings, some of which are missing. There is a wrought iron lamp sconce featured on one side of the fence and perhaps it is one of a pair, the other one missing. It is a stuccoed two-storey house with four sash windows per storey and a central chimney stack set in the hipped roof. The windows are covered internally to conform to World War II wartime blackout restrictions. The entrance door is recessed to the left with The White House signage visible on the lintel. In the background, there is a bricked building at the rear with many window panes covered for wartime blackout. There is a tall street lamp pole situated at the front of the property although only wires, not a lamp is attached. To the right of the property is a side entrance which was probably for tradesmen and servants. In the foreground, the central cobbled setts and tram lines along Old Kent Road are visible. This property still exists and is currently in use as a place of worship, although the chimney stack has been removed. Listing number 1385736.
