Shops in Old Kent Road
Description
A view of shops on 211-231 Old Kent Road, Bermondsey, at Marcia Road. An estate car is pulling out of Marcia Road with a driver and passenger. There are several parked cars visible in Marcia Road, including a Mini and a van. On the corner there is a blurred image of a woman walking past pushing a pram. There is a signboard advertising the lease for sale of the large shop premises situated at 211-217 Old Kent Road. The side elevation advertises Carters Menswear Branches Throughout London. The entrances are closed and the display windows are clad in either security board or plastic sheet coverings although many sale signs advertising Closing Down, together with the store name are visible. Along the bottom sills are signs for Tailors, Juvenile Outfitters and Hatters. On the parapet above is a metal railing fence and three stone lions, couchant. In the middle of the parapet on the front elevation is a clock with the head, neck and shoulders of a suited man wearing a bowler hat, protruding above. Apparently at midday, the bowler hat tilted backwards. On the top of the terraced upper floors is a more elaborate stone parapet adorned with urns and a central acorn. Signage advertises Carter Estd. 1851 and in the middle, Hatter, Hosier, Tailor and Outfitter. There are also two pictures painted on the facade which appear to be figures rowing in a top hat for a boat. This was George Carter’s flagship store. All branches had closed by the millennium. The adjacent visible shops are Gentry and Exclusive. Carter’s has been redeveloped into low rise apartments with a large charity shop currently operating at ground level. The remaining terrace survives but is unrecognisable.
