Description
A view of the side Bear Gardens elevation and entrance to Union Works, 60 Park Street, Bankside. The Union Works is a Grade II listed workshop and engineering premises which at the time of the photograph housed Porn & Dunwoody Ltd, a lift manufacturer and installation company, since dissolved. The building is on a site adjacent to the historic Hope Theatre and bear baiting arena. The wider area, including the site of Union Works encompassed bear cages, dog kennels, ponds, stables and associated entertainment such as brothels and alehouses. There is a small cobbled parking and loading area leading into the two commercial entrances, where a Ford Cortina is parked. The entrance to the left, has folding shutters which are open. On the adjacent corner, the Porn & Dunwoody Ltd signage is painted vertically. The central entrance has open double wooden doors, above which, the Union Works signage is painted on the brick facade. To the right of the photograph is another entrance which may be to the offices. The name of the company Porn & Dunwoody Ltd can be seen above the door. The Union Works building survives but has been redeveloped into residential accommodation. The rear aspect from where the central entrance can be seen in the photograph has since been demolished and redeveloped into multi-storey residential accommodation known as The Bear Pit.
