Description
A view of Oswin Street at the corner with St George's Road, Elephant and Castle. The view looks across at the offices and works of Gilman and Spencer Ltd, a maltster and manufacturer of brewing preservatives. The factory chimney is visible on the left. Several vehicles are parked on the street, including two Volkswagen Beetle models and a Bedford van. In the foreground, on the corner of Oswin Street, is a stepped paved leisure space on what was a ruin, perhaps after World War II bombing blitz in London. This space now borders the London College of Communication. Oswin Street was known as Pitt Street when the Castle Brewery was situated there in the late nineteenth century. It is unclear when the Gilman and Spencer building and manufacturing works were demolished but there was much redevelopment in the area in the 1960s.
