Description
A view looking north from opposite 3 Oswin Street, to St George's Road, Elephant and Castle. The chimney and yard to the the rear of Gilman and Spencer Ltd, maltster and manufacturers of brewing preservatives, is visible. Outside the entrance to the yard there are multiple wooden barrels stacked in the street together with a barrel trolley. Beyond, there is an empty six-wheel flatbed truck parked with two or three men wearing caps nearby, chatting. Across St George’s Road there is a car park and a billboard advertising John Courage beer. Parked outside 3 Oswin Street is a four door Morris Minor car. This street was known as Pitt Street when the Castle Brewery was on the site in the late nineteenth century. The Gilman and Spencer premises which have since been demolished and redeveloped into mixed residential and commercial properties in the 1960s, although the terraced tenement remains.
