Description
A view down Oswin Street, looking south-west from St George's Road, Elephant and Castle. On the north-west corner is situated Gilman and Spencer Ltd, a maltster and manufacturer of brewing preservatives. There is an industrial chimney to the rear of the building, adjacent to which is a long row of bricked terraced houses or flats. There is a large six-wheeled truck parked outside the premises and another smaller vehicle parked within the entrance. Electric streetlights are situated in Oswin Street. There are railings to the front of the Gilman & Spencer building on St George’s Road, to the right of which is a telephone box and a billboard advertising Double Diamond bottled beer. Oswin Street was known as Pitt Street in the late nineteenth century and the Castle Brewery was on the site of Gilman and Spencer. It is unclear when the Gilman and Spencer building and manufacturing works were demolished but there was much redevelopment in the area in the 1960s and this site now consists of mixed residential and commercial properties.
