Doorway in Old Kent Road
Description
Entrance doorway at 122 Old Kent Road, Southwark, located on the corner with Massinger Street. The door and its decorative, slightly curved wooden frame is painted black and set in a semi-painted stone wall with one step. The door itself has vertical panels with a doorknob and letter box set in the centre. Above the lintel there is an opaque glass fanlight with a heart shape in the centre. Fanlights became popular in the Georgian period and this doorway is likely to be of that period with later additions or modifications. There is a modern doorbell attached to the left and a modern-style lock. To the right of the entrance is a framed hole which is likely to have been a boot scraper, although missing the ironmongery. Number 122 Old Kent Road no longer exists; it was part of a wider demolition in order to accommodate the Bricklayer’s Arms flyover in 1967/68.
