Description
View of East Street Market on the corner of East Street and Blackwood Street, Southwark. The busy street is full of shoppers, with stalls lining both sides. A man in a white coat stands still for the capture, pointing at his wares. Behind are three two-storey cottages on Blackwood Street. The corner building hosts a florist and carries an advert for Persil. On the left, East Street church can be seen. East Street was officially declared the site of a market from 1880, although it is likely a market operated here for centuries beforehand. Inspectors of the London County Council (LCC) Public Control Department, established in 1891, likely visited stalls such as this to control the standards of the weights and measurements used.
