Title
View of Crosby Row
Description
View of Crosby Row within the Tabard Estate, Southwark, looking east and showing a muddy road after rain. On the left is a series of three-storey brick buildings hosting retailers including Robert F. Lee, a skin and fur merchant. On the right are three two-storey houses continuing into a terrace of three-storey structures. A woman wearing a shawl and a man talk in the doorway. Above is a letting sign, and another can be seen on the other side of the street. Named after the Tabard Inn of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, the Tabard Estate was planned in 1910 to replace the slums of the area, and completed in 1916. It was expanded in the inter-war period. By the 1960s the estate itself became dilapidated and there were calls by residences to be rehoused, although only a small part was demolished. This view was captured shortly before the buildings were demolished and replaced with the estate, although houses at 25-27 Crosby Row survive to this day.
