View of the East Street Market at 99-107 East Street, Southwark, by Brandon Street, showing a terrace of single-storey buildings with boarded up shop fronts. In front of number 99 is a street vendor, which three women and their children attend to. In the distance the Mason Arms public house can be seen, with roof decorations and balustrades. East Street was officially declared the site of a market from 1880, although it is likely a market operated here centuries before. The London County Council (LCC) Public Control Department, established in 1891, likely visited stalls such as this to control the standards of the weights and measurements used. The line of single-storey shops no longer exist, and the site now hosts Newbolt House, a residential block.
