View of Crown Yard
Description
General view of the Crown Yard within the Tabard Estate, Southwark. It shows a narrow cobbled road line with wooden fencing and two houses on the left, and a brick wall on the right. In the foreground is a lamppost. A wooden structure can be seen at the end of the road. Named after the Tabard Inn of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, the Tabard Estate was planned in 1910 to replace the slums of the area, and completed in 1916. It was expanded in the inter-war period. By the 1960s the estate itself became dilapidated and there were calls by residences to be rehoused, although only a small part was demolished.
