Title
Warehouse in Newcomen Street
Description
The front elevation of 70 Newcomen Street, Borough. The late nineteenth-century hop warehouse lies behind 65-69 Newcomen Street with access via a yard leading off the street. The three and four-storey warehouse has loading bays and hoists to winch goods to the upper floors, and a cobbled yard with parked cars. Number 70 Newcomen Street is on the former site of the Marshalsea, the notorious Southwark prison, demolished in the 1870s. At some time in the twentieth century the yard was renamed Axe and Bottle Court and the hop warehouse converted to commercial space. Both are still extant and this section of Newcomen Sreet is a Southwark Council designated Conservation Area.
