Description
The north end of Newington Butts at Elephant and Castle, flanked on the left by an area of fenced off wasteland with the ruined remains of nineteenth-century buildings and a large billboard advertising Double Diamond beer. There is a road sign indicating the routes which converge at the Elephant and Castle, and Borough of Southwark sign. Burton's store, built in the 1930s, stands between St George's Road and Newington Causeway and just visible on the far right is the Elephant and Castle Undergound Station, built in 1906. The Elephant and Castle underwent extensive redevelopment post World War II, and Burton's no longer exists. The Underground Station remains and the empty land is the site of the London College of Communication, built in 1964 and still extant in 2021.
