View of Moss Alley
Description
Looking north along Moss Alley, Bankside. A woman watches the photographer from an open doorway, whilst a group of residents and their children can be seen further along the narrow passageway. The alley is lined by two and three-storey houses with wooden shutters at ground level windows. According to Charles Booth's London Poverty map of 1898-9, Moss Alley and surrounding streets were areas of the poorest class, semi-criminal and in chronic want. The housing in Moss Alley and environs was demolished to allow expansion of the existing 1891 Bankside Power Station, as London's need for electricity grew. The Power Station was closed in 1981 and the building redeveloped as the Tate Modern Gallery, which opened in 2000.
