Title
Buildings in Chapel Place
Description
View of 23 Chapel Place, Bermondsey. A detached two-storey building with basement. Three steps lead up to an ornate porch with Doric style columns supporting the porch roof. In front of the house are stacked Costermonger hand carts. Chapel Street is so named after a Wesleyan Chapel and Sunday School built 1809 that was situated there. Behind the house can be seen Pink's Jam Factory. E&T Pink was the largest jam manufacturer in the world in 1894 and employed 2,000 workers. The factory was demolished in 1935 and replaced by a housing estate, and this part of Chapel Place is now called Hankey Place with post-war housing.
