Title
View of Cumberland Market
Description
A view across Cumberland Market, Regent's Park, looking northeast towards shops with accommodation above. The market square is partly cobbled and five horse-drawn carts without their horses are visible and are laden with hay. A woman is seen passing the carts. Two lines of posts denote a roadway through the market square. The letters "mble's" visible on a tall building at the left is probably a reference to William Grimble, who operated a gin distillery occupying a large site to the northwest of the market. He later began brewing vinegar at a site off the northeast corner of the market. The building in the picture may denote the entrance to the vinegar brewery. The market, when it functioned for a century until the late 1920s, traded hay and straw. The square has been replaced by playing fields, tennis courts and a playground and the buildings have been replaced by local authority housing, the Regent's Park Estate.
