Description
Rowton House, 1-25 King's Cross Road, Islington, looking south by Cubitt Street. Rowton Houses were a chain of hostels built in London and elsewhere in England, by the Victorian philanthropist Lord Rowton to provide decent accommodation for working men in place of the squalid lodging houses of the time. This one was opened on 1st February 1896 with 678 beds. Advertising hoardings surround a vacant plot for a theatre play, Punch Stout beer (Anchor Brewery), Sunblest bread, Penguin biscuits, a generic advert for Beer, and a poster for Ukrainian State Cossack Company. Finally an advert for Chivers Jelly with real fruit juice. In the background is the General Post Office Building. None of these building now exist.
