Description
A view of the Post Office (later BT) Tower from Charlotte Street, Fitzrovia, looking north from Tottenham Street. Bunting hangs across the street. The street is largely filled with older buildings, many of them shops and restaurants with three storeys of accommodation above, with some postwar office developments. On the left at number 5 Charlotte Street is the first branch of restaurant group Chez Gerard, a chain which later went into administration. At 7-9 (odd) is a printers and 15-17 (odd) is a building with a sign reading Cottrell & Co, later the Charlotte Street Hotel. Parked on the left is a Ford Cortina Mark III Estate with registration number LYN558K, behind which is a Volvo estate car. On the right, is a Bedford truck bearing the name Auguste Noel Ltd and registration number EMY578J. The two ornate lamp standards flanking the entrance to numbers 15-17, dating from about 1880, were Grade II listed in 1987; listing number 1357279. Built in the 1960s as a communications facility, the BT Tower was Grade II listed in 2003; listing number 1350342.
