Title
Arches at St Pancras Station
Description
View looking north showing railway arches in Pancras Road, St Pancras. The arches formed the side of Somers Town railway coal bays. In the image they are occupied by businesses with Bendall Motors at 58 Pancras Road. Two men are standing near a car and an arch that is open as a vehicle entrance. A large number of cars is gathered near far arches. The arches no longer exist and an access road occupies the site. This serves St Pancras station, which underwent a major renovation about 2007. In the distance surrounded by trees is St Pancras Old Church. The church has an 11th-century core with later medieval additions. It was rebuilt and enlarged in 1847-8 by Alexander Dick Gough and Robert Lewis Roumieu. The church was Grade II* listed in 1954; listing number 1113246. Dating from 1865-1876 and by George Gilbert Scott, St Pancras Station and the former Midland Grand Hotel were Grade I listed in 1967; listing number 1342037. Originally part of the churchyard of St Pancras Old Church, the gardens were opened as a public garden in 1877. They were laid out in their present form in 1890-1 by the vestry, in conjunction with the Midland Railway Company. The gardens were Grade II listed in 1987; listing number 1001689. They include many notable tombs including Sir John Soane and Johann Christian Bach.
