View onto Pancras Road
Description
View along Pancras Road, St Pancras, looking south with a wall and railings of St Pancras Gardens on the left. A gasholder is just visible through the trees in the church grounds. Some of these gasholders remain, having been relocated and used as a decorative feature or for residential accommodation. The block of flats to the right is part of the Goldington Street Estate and still exists. Part of St Pancras Station is visible in distance but this has been rebuilt. Several moving vehicles can be seen. Originally part of the churchyard of St Pancras Old Church, the gardens were opened as a public garden in 1877. They were laid out in their present form in 1890-1 by the vestry, in conjunction with the Midland Railway Company. The gardens were Grade II listed in 1987; listing number 1001689. They include many notable tombs including Sir John Soane and Johann Christian Bach. The church has an 11th-century core with later medieval additions. It was rebuilt and enlarged in 1847-8 by Alexander Dick Gough and Robert Lewis Roumieu. The church was Grade II* listed in 1954; listing number 1113246. Dating from 1865-1876 and by George Gilbert Scott, St Pancras Station and the former Midland Grand Hotel were Grade I listed in 1967; listing number 1342037.
