Title
Houses in Model Buildings
Description
View south taken from Cubitt Street, St Pancras, showing terraced houses at 24-13 Model Buildings to the left and 1-12 Model Buildings to the right. The road is a cul-de-sac. The two-storey, early nineteenth-century houses have a one-window range apart from number 24, which has a two-window range to the west elevation and a one-window range to the north elevation, where a cast-iron gate and railings with fleur-de-lys finials can be seen. There is a coal bucket on the doorstep. To the right of the image is the eastern elevation of 3 Cubitt Street. In the lower corner of the building is a urine deflector; a triangular-shaped concrete infill designed to try to improve sanitation in the mid nineteenth century by physically discouraging urination in the street. Two adults and a child with a scooter can be seen standing outside number 23 Model Buildings. A pair of streetlamps is visible on each side of the road. In the distance can be seen the former General Post Office buildings at Mount Pleasant. At the end of Model Buildings is the rear of 51 Calthorpe Street, a former school house, which still stands today as offices. All the other buildings in the image have since been demolished and replaced with mixed residential, office and hotel accommodation.
