Houses in Mecklenburgh Square
Description
View north showing a terrace of early nineteenth-century, four-storey townhouses with basements at 14-34 Mecklenburgh Square, Bloomsbury. Mecklenburgh Square was built between 1792-1825 as a residential development on former fields owned by the Foundling hospital. The square was named after King George III's Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburgh-Strelitz. There are three wide steps to each panelled door, which is set within a semi-circular arch with patterned fanlight above. There are continuous balcony railings at first-floor level. There are cast-iron railings to the frontages with urn finials visible. Four Greek Ionic columns can be seen above number 23 Mecklenburgh Square. Moulded leaf motifs are visible on some of the terrace frontages. Number 26 incorporates the former numbers 27-34, which were destroyed by enemy bombing in the early 1940s and is now known as Byron Court. These were rebuilt in 1950 to the original designs, as was number 15. Numbers 27-34 were originally built by Joseph Kay. Thomas Penthrin built numbers 11-19 and 30-34. George Payne built numbers 20-29. Mecklenburgh Square has strong associations with prominent writers, intellectuals and artists including Virginia Woolf, T. S. Eliot and Dorothy L. Sayers. Numbers 11-26 are Grade II* listed; listing number 1113118. There is a Ford Model Y parked in the foreground with another saloon car parked in the distance. There is an ornate streetlamp in view.
