Description
View south showing the railway arches beneath the platforms at St Pancras station in Midland Road, St Pancras. The main station can be seen in the distance. Unit numbers 17-20 are being used as commercial businesses. Number 17 is trading as Leo Autos with a sign saying, "Any make of car same day service crypton tuning". Number 20 is trading as Laytons Ltd wine vaults. At first-floor level there is a repeat pattern of triple brick arches. There are numerous vehicles parked in the road including a Mercedes 200 saloon and a line of taxis. A Volkswagen Golf with its bonnet raised, is parked facing arch number 17. There is a pedestrian in view and a street lamp can be seen. St Pancras station was opened in 1868 to designs by George Gilbert Scott. The Midland Road arches served as a foundation structure for the high-level platforms above. The design allowed for construction of large, accessible cellars in the arches beneath the platforms, which were originally used to store barrels of beer from the Midlands, particularly Burton-On-Trent. The station buildings are Grade I listed; listing number 1342037. The arches have been retained as part of a redevelopment of the site in the 1990s.
